Alcohol and Substance Abuse Counselor Training Program

A Practical, Academic Competency-Based Program
-Approved by the Wisconsin Certification Board, Inc. and the State of Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction

The Saint Martin's College and Seminary Alcohol and Substance Abuse Counselor Training Program provides training for students and professionals in alcohol and substance abuse.

Trainees will need a total of 360 clock hours if course work to meet the minimum certification requirements .A special certificate will be awarded upon completion of the courses.

The specific goals of this program are behavioral in nature and are aimed at the student's acquisition of specific of specific identification and treatment skills.

Demonstrated proficiencies in the following will be required:

  • Interviewing techniques
  • Psycho-social evaluation
  • Treatment planning
  • Consultation and referral
  • Individual Counseling
  • Group Counseling
  • Didactic lecturing
  • Family counseling
  • Progress notes/record keeping
  • Crisis intervention
  • Client follow-up and referral(aftercare)
  • Familiarization with alcohol and drugs of abuse
  • Differential diagnosis
  • Etiological theory
  • Epidemiological baseline
  • Rules of conduct and ethics

Admission Criteria
High School diploma or equivalent or prior experience in the AODA field.
